One of Northwest Arkansas’ leading communications companies earlier today to celebrate the launch of ultra-fast internet service in the region.

The 100 percent fiber network, which is part of the AT&T umbrella brand, will provide buyers with a 1-gigabit internet connection for eligible homes, apartments and small businesses in parts of Bentonville, Fayetteville, Rogers and Springdale.

The 1-gigabit speed is fast enough to download 25 songs in one second or a favorite television show in three seconds, the company said.

“Our customers are increasingly interacting with their world in more data-intensive ways,” said Ed Drilling, president of AT&T Arkansas. “A growing number of people are streaming content directly from their devices, and interacting with family and friends through live videos. For these reasons, we’re bringing our fastest internet speeds to Northwest Arkansas and its surrounding communities.”

Jeff Amerine, the founding principal of Fayetteville’s Startup Junkie, said Northwest Arkansas companies will benefit from AT&T’s new product offering.

Monday’s announcement by AT&T comes four months after Ozarks Electric announced that it will be offering its customers the ability to purchase a gigabit internet service. Called OzarksGo, the service is being made available in certain areas of Washington County, including portions of Fayetteville, Farmington and Tontitown.

Northwest Arkansas is among 67 metropolitan areas where AT&T is making its fastest internet service available. The company markets its ultra-fast service to more than 3 million locations. More than 500,000 of those locations are apartments and condo units.

The company is on track to exceed 12.5 million locations by mid-2019.

In Arkansas, AT&T invested more than $550 million in its wireless and wired networks between 2013 and 2015. The investments improved the company’s wireless and wired network reliability, coverage and speed.
