Razorback Opener, Slaughter Pen Make for Huge Weekend in NWA

orthwest Arkansas has a few eye-popping weekends each year, and the University of Arkansas football home opener certainly makes the cut.

But when the more than 70,000 fans coming to Fayetteville for the Razorbacks game are combined with the people headed to the Slaughter Pen Mountain Bike Festival in Bentonville on the same weekend, it creates a positive energy in the region that’s hard to beat.

The Razorbacks opened the season at Auburn last weekend, and the Hogs are looking for their first win headed into Saturday’s game against Nicholls State. A study released last year showed the incredible economic impact of a single Razorback football game on the region. The average spending per game by fans was near $4.9 million, and two-thirds of game attendees are from outside Northwest Arkansas, the study determined.

The three-day mountain bike festival starts Friday with a variety of events on the Bentonville Square, and continues Saturday with vendors, trail rides and riding exhibitions at Slaughter Pen Hollow Park. There are activities on the downtown square in the evening.

Sunday is Slaughter Pen’s main race day. The Arkansas Mountain Bike Championship Series Cross Country Race takes place with several start times in the morning.

More information is available at the festival’s website by clicking here.
