Northwest Arkansas’ growth has long been driven by a willingness to invest in the future.

This month, members of the Walton family unveiled designs for the future campus of a new STEM-focused university planned for downtown Bentonville. Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, the campus will include academic facilities, student housing, makerspaces and public gathering spaces on the former Walmart Home Office site. The university is expected to welcome its first students in 2029 and will focus on preparing graduates for a future shaped by artificial intelligence, advanced technology and entrepreneurship.

The announcement marks an important milestone for a project that has the potential to strengthen Northwest Arkansas’ talent pipeline for decades to come.

The unveiling follows several major developments for the university over the past year. Earlier this year, the Walton family announced the appointment of Dr. David Mazyck as the institution’s inaugural president. Mazyck, formerly head of the School of Engineering Design and Innovation at Penn State University, is leading the university’s development ahead of its planned 2029 opening.

The university is being designed around emerging technologies, entrepreneurship and applied learning, with artificial intelligence integrated throughout the student experience. Project leaders have emphasized hands-on problem solving, interdisciplinary collaboration and close connections with industry partners.

The project has also continued to expand its footprint in downtown Bentonville. Additional property acquisitions surrounding the former Walmart Home Office site reflect the scale of the long-term vision taking shape for both the campus and the surrounding district.

The newly released campus designs offer a closer look at how the university will connect with the surrounding community. Rather than functioning as a traditional standalone campus, the university is intended to integrate with surrounding neighborhoods, trails, parks and civic spaces. The design reflects a growing emphasis on walkability, connectivity and placemaking while strengthening ties between the campus and downtown Bentonville.

The university’s focus on innovation, entrepreneurship and emerging technologies aligns with broader efforts to strengthen Northwest Arkansas’ position as a center for research, business creation and technological advancement.

The project represents more than a workforce investment. It is also part of a broader effort to build the educational and civic institutions that support long-term prosperity and quality of life. Alongside investments in health care, research, entrepreneurship and educational opportunity, the university will help strengthen the foundation needed to support future generations of residents, workers and innovators.

The campus design also reflects broader conversations taking place across Northwest Arkansas about community development and quality of life. Its integration with downtown Bentonville, surrounding parks and public spaces mirrors a growing emphasis on creating places where people can live, learn, work and connect.

Scheduled to welcome its first students in 2029, the STEM-focused university represents a long-term investment in education, innovation and talent that will help shape Northwest Arkansas for generations to come.
