Our Work

HEALTH CARE

The Council developed its Health Care Transformation Division to facilitate collaboration among providers to make the region a destination for health care.

Northwest Arkansas first measured its health care system in 2019, identifying it as a $2.7 billion sector of the economy. That work also highlighted a significant gap, with an estimated $1 billion in annual patient outmigration driven largely by limited access to specialty care.

That gap was measured again in 2024, showing meaningful progress. Patient outmigration has been reduced by more than $250 million annually, meaning more care is now being delivered within the region. At the same time, the health care sector has continued to grow, expanding its economic impact and strengthening its role as a driver of jobs and investment.

These gains reflect targeted action across the region, including expanded services, growth in graduate medical education and stronger coordination among providers and partners.

The Northwest Arkansas Council’s Health Care Transformation Division is helping drive this work forward. The division brings together health systems, higher education, philanthropy and industry partners to align around shared priorities. That includes expanding graduate medical education, supporting the development of new care models, strengthening the workforce pipeline and advancing value-based care. The goal is to increase access, improve outcomes and reduce the need for residents to leave the region for care.

Keeping pace with growth will require continued investment in workforce, expanded specialty care and stronger coordination across the system so more care can be delivered in Northwest Arkansas.
